I think I have typed this on the blog many a time, I flip flop between distrobutions and desktop environments often. Sometimes this is simply a stress managment thing for me. I find the swap of distro as a means of finding a moment of Zen in a stressful time. Other times it is seeing something interesting in another desktop environment like KDE or Gnome than what I'm currently using, or something that Fedora, Ubuntu, or Arch is doing that seems either interesting, easier to use, pretty (shamelessly I type that), or a perception of being more secure.
The last three months is rural front yard of distros all strewn about. I have installed (and I can't remember the order):
Now you might think think what a huge amount of work this must be to get all the data back to do my daily tasks. The truth is that through a mix of Syncthing and Mozilla Sync I can be back up and running in literal minutes after an installation has finished. And about that installation time... Is it just me or the average installation of a Linux distro silly fast? While an install of Windows 11 is considerably faster than it used to be it doesn't even come close to the speed of any of the distros listed above.
So in a manner of minutes, I'm back to where I once was just on something different. The process has given me an rich appreciation of Open Source and both the distros and desktop environments that we have available to us these days. It is truly a golden age of choice and ability within these distros and environments! So sure, my flip flopping is a complete waste of time but it's cheaper than anti-depressants, alcohol, or therapy (I actually need some or all of these three right now come to think of it).
So if you are fellow flip flopper - enjoy it! You're learning something, expanding your brain just a bit. And what am I typing this on you ask? Fedora 41 Workstation (Gnome).
